Tyler's Black Eye

Two Year Stats **Updated**
**I got the results from Tyler's blood work this morning and it all came back normal. She referred me to a dermatologist next so we will see what they say. **
We had the triplets two year well visit appointment scheduled a couple of weeks ago but due to a confusion between me and the office as to when the appointment time actually was, we had to reschedule. Their appointment was rescheduled for today and unfortunately Craig couldn't get off work today and I was a little anxious about taking this on by myself. The nurses move very quickly asking questions to one person on development etc. while the other person is busy removing clothes and helping the nurse take measurements, weights, temperatures etc. to get them ready to see the doctor. To add to that, vaccines are to be given which means three upset babies needing to be consoled. Even when Craig is with me, it still feels like we are one parent short. Last minute yesterday I mentioned the situation to my MIL, Jami and thankfully she was able to meet me there. I am so glad she was able to meet me because we had some unexpected things happen which would have been so difficult for me to do on my own. She is a lifesaver, that woman, in so many ways!!
Tyler's stats:
30.2 pounds (73%)
36 1/2" long (91%)
19. 1/4" head (53%)
My concern with Tyler involved his hair. Tyler's hair is very brittle, like an animal's hair. It hasn't always been that way, but I just thought he would grow out of it or maybe his hair would just be that way...either way, I wasn't very concerned at first. Seems like a silly thing to ask your doctor about and I honestly wasn't too concerned with it until the person who cut his hair said he had never seen a baby with hair as coarse and brittle as Tyler's. My doctor said these symptoms can be associated with anemia or a thyroid problem. So, after the appointment, we had to go across the hall to the lab to have his blood drawn. I was so dreading this as we sat there in the waiting room. I was so upset just thinking about what was to come. When it came time to take his blood, I started to cry - the lab techs knew but Tyler didn't. I just tried to comfort him until it was over. I told them I didn't know who this was harder for, him or me. Then I thanked her for getting his vein successfully the first time. I have had them miss my veins before and had to be re-stuck and I know how painful and frustrating I was. I hoped that didn't happen to my baby. When we left, and headed out to meet my MIL, Whitney and Hannah, I immediately started crying....hard! It is so hard to see our babies in pain. We have been so blessed our kids have always been so healthy and this was the first time I have had to take them for blood work outside of the NICU days when they were born. Please pray for my little guy that there will be no medical issues and that his hair is just naturally coarse.
23.4 pounds (8%) her highest percentile yet
35" long (75%)
19" head (68%)
Hannah has had recurring yeast infections so I mentioned that to my doctor and she thought it was just because of the diaper and when she gets potty trained, this will stop happening. She wanted to do a finger prick anyway just to make sure she wasn't diabetic. So we did that and Hannah didn't even cry. She cried more when she could suck her fingers because there was a bandaid covering one of them. We got those results right away and she isn't diabetic so that was a huge blessing!

Tyler's mohawk
Because of the move, we have been extra busy and have not had the chance to get Tyler's hair cut. The last time it was "cut" it was actually done by me and Craig. We decided to just buzz it off with the shavers being summer and all. We decided to do this again except this time, in the middle of our shaving, the shaver went dead and needed to be re-charged. I couldn't find the charge cord so he had to go with a mohawk for a day. It was initially shaved in the evening so the next day we all took a trip to Target (yes, I took my child out in public looking like that) to get some more shavers. We got home and finished shaving his head and here is the final product.

Dallas Zoo and Tyler's scratched cornea
We've had a very eventful week around here. Monday Jill and I took the kiddies to the Dallas Zoo. It was my first trip to the zoo with the babies and it was a great day for it. It was a little cool in the morning, but after lunch, it warmed up nicely and it was a beautiful day. I haven't been to the zoo in ages so it was like I had never been before. The babies are still a little young for the zoo but I think they still enjoyed being out of the house and enjoying new surroundings. And WOW! What a workout it was for me pushing 3 babies for 4 hours up and down steep hills and in and out of crowds of people. We enjoyed seeing the animals and had a nice picnic lunch. We got to stay a little longer because 2 of my 3 fell asleep (very rare) in the stroller and Jill's youngest fell asleep too. Whitney stayed awake but wasn't fussy at all. I am really surprised and glad it went so well especially since they didn't nap in the car like I hoped they would on the way there.
We got home and had about a good hour of playtime before Hannah hit Tyler and knocked him to the floor. He cried so hard I knew he must have been hurt in some way, not just mad. He was doing this weird thing with his eyes (rolling them sorta) and he wouldn't hardly open them. I thought she hit him so hard, he hit his head and damaged something internally. I was finally able to get him to calm down and he stopped doing the weird thing with his eyes so he went down to nap. He woke up several times crying as if he was in pain and started up the weird eye thing again. I began inspecting his eye and saw something on his cornea - it looked like a little fuzz at first so I gently rubbed my finger over his eye lid in hopes of moving it off his cornea. It kept bothering him so I kept looking at it and then after looking at it more and more, I was sure it was a scratch. I called Craig and told him to come home so I could take Tyler to the doctor. When I took him in, it was in fact a scratched cornea, so we got some antibiotics to help prevent infection and headed home. The after hours pedi referred me to a pediatric opthamologist. So, Tuesday I took him to see the opthamologist and she said it was just a minor scratch and it was already almost healed. They heal fast!! Now, I just have to take him back in on Thursday to get one last check of his eye and make sure it has healed up properly.
We have officially entered into toddlerhood around here. We have been having some problems with the babies lately - mainly Hannah but they each play a role and I have been trying to get as much reading done as I can to nip this behavior in the bud as quickly as possible. Hannah is just a bully - just plain mean - she bites sometimes, but not as much as she used to, she steals toys, she pushes the other two around and she throws fits most of the time. The fit throwing is the biggest problem. Tyler is a sweet boy but is just that - all boy! He likes to hit everything and everybody. He isn't being mean and doesn't realize he is hurting the others but we are trying to teach him to be gentle. He also likes to tackle the girls. Whitney is so sensitive, anytime somebody steals her toy, she cries; anytime somebody hits her, she cries; anytime somebody so much as touches her, she cries. We've been reading up on ways to handle these behaviors but if anybody has any good books they suggest or methods that apply Christian, Biblical principles, please let me know.
Craig is also getting ready to have his shoulder surgery next week - the 25th. Please pray for him and a smooth and speedy recovery. Also, pray for me that I can take care of the babies, him and keep up with school for several weeks or months without losing my mind.
Stay tuned for a picture post of some of our recent outings.

First Steps in the midst of the pukey's (among other madness)
The other two picked up a little cold earlier last week from Craig or maybe from some time that we were out and about. I took Tyler and Whitney both out with me on separate occasions last week and now they are the ones to get sick. Anyway... they got a little cold - nothing major. So, their appetites haven't been too great this week either, but far better than "riblet's" appetite. The babies have been extra clingy and whiny because of this and it can be pretty frustrating for me (and them) because I don't have enough hands to comfort everybody at once.
I was SO looking forward to the weekend and having a little "break" and "help" because of my unusually rough week. Friday, Craig told me he was being forced to work Saturday which we had been expecting all week but didn't know for sure until Friday. Of course, I had something planned Saturday morning and couldn't go, but such is life... See, for those of you who don't know, my husband works A LOT of hours. He works so hard to provide for our family and I appreciate that, but the demands of the phone company can be very hard on family life for sure! He almost never feeds them a single meal during the week. I get them up, change their diapers, feed them, clean them up, clean up the mess from the meal, clothe them for the day and then do all that again for lunch and dinner. Sometimes he gets home in time to see them for a short time before bedtime so he can help me with putting them to bed, but let me tell you... it is UTTERLY exhausting to do that day in and day out with very little help! And mind you, I am also a part time student trying to keep up with 6 hours of school. But, sometimes I feel like a single mom I tell ya! And since it is so difficult for me to get out with the babies, I don't see too many people - I am pretty much at home by myself most of the time. It can get pretty old sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I love being home with my babies but sometimes it gets pretty lonely. I just wish it wasn't so difficult logistically and just physically exhausting to get out and about with three babies in tow. I look so forward to the weekend, it isn't funny. And when Craig has to work unexpectedly, sometimes I lose it, like Friday evening. Sometimes I feel like such a bad mom when my kids "need" me and I just don't feel like I have anything more to give and I can't wait for naptime/bedtime. Caring for 3 babies 24/7 is a very draining (but rewarding) job. So, Craig got home and "relieved" me so I could get a break. I decided we had to make some kind of change in order for me to remain sain. So we decided everybody would start getting up earlier to have family time in the morning before Craig goes to work (since as of right now, we NEVER sit down together to eat, not one meal) and so daddy could help with the kids (at least one meal) before heading off to work.
Then, some time in the middle of the night Friday night, we wake up to the sound of Tyler's cry. Craig went to check on him and he seemed fine by the time he got to their room so he came back to bed. We get up Saturday morning to start our day - Craig gets ready for work, and we get the kids up and ready for breakfast. We go in their room to find Tyler and Whitney both laying in a bed full of vomit! Now this made me feel just horrible. My poor babies had been laying in vomit through the whole night. Whitney's was only on a small portion of her bed but Tyler's was ALL over the bed and ALL over him. We got them changed, cleaned up, started with breakfast and the sheets changed then Craig headed off to work. I cried as Craig left for work because I knew just what my day would entail and I still hadn't yet re-charged my batteries from the week. Yes, I know, I sound so selfish crying about ME when my babies are sick, except they didn't seem to feel bad at all - they would play like normal, vomit, then go back to playing as usual. Anyway, I started cleaning them up from breakfast and not five minutes later, Tyler puked in the floor - GREAT! I couldn't figure out if they had a stomach virus or if they were vomiting because of the flim from their colds. So, I cleaned that up and him and proceed to clean up the other two from breakfast. All seemed fine after that - and everybody played as usual. They go down for their first nap and then after they woke up from that, I went in to get them and find Whitney with puke ALL over her and ALL over her bed. She never even cried during her nap. I felt SO bad for HER (not me). So, I had to get her an immediate bath in the kitchen sink before lunch while the other two were eating. Another load of laundry started... Then, we had play time. Whitney was playing just fine, when all the sudden she started crying out of no where. It was a different kind of cry - I can't explain it. So, I grabbed her up and just in time, leaned her over the gate and she proceeded to puke on the tile in the kitchen. Poor baby - it was so sad. So, I got her cleaned up as well as the big mess. Then, not too long after that, the same thing happened with Tyler - crying out of no where, I snatch him up, but I made it to the sink this time. Both times, I managed to save their outfits, so that was good. Luckily, Craig was able to swing by and bring me some pedialyte so I had them drinking that to help with dehydration. After that, we had no more episodes... thank God!
And no, this post isn't all about puke and my self-pitty - there is something positive and exciting to post! At some point during the afternoon, Tyler took his first step. He has been standing more and more unassisted and is able to stand for longer periods of time. He stood up and balanced himself and I called him to come to me with my hands out and I got him to take one step toward me. It was so cute - he was so proud of himself. Then, today, he did it again for me while Craig was home and he got to see it too. He won't take more than one step before dropping to the ground to crawl to me, but it won't be long before he is walking everywhere! He is also starting to point (with his hand, not one finger yet) for something he wants. He will talk his baby language as he points, trying to tell me something and it is so cute. He is also starting to wave, as is Hannah. I think I may have already said in a previous post, but if not, Whitney waves very well and knows how to say "bye bye". It sounds more like "ba ba". But she knows the two go hand in hand (bye bye and a wave) so if I do one or the other, she starts doing the opposite.
So, that was our weekend pretty uneventful. :):) Hope yours was as uneventful as ours was. ;)

1 year already?!?!?!
This was taken the morning of their birth before I found out we would be delivering that day otherwise I don't think I would have looked so calm.
See this is what I looked like after I found out I was delivering that day - the look of shear terror!
At 3:23 pm Tyler was born, at 3:24 Whitney was born and at 3:26 Hannah was born. And for those of you new to my blog, and who may have not gone back and read, Whitney was in position the entire pregnancy to be born last (baby C was how she was referred to), but during delivery, she decided she was not being born last and forced her way out second. Hannah was breached which is why it took my doctors a couple extra minutes to get her out. They assessed the babies, cleaned them up a bit and brought them to me for a quick moment before sending them to the NICU.
Meeting Hannah for the first time. Even though she was born last, I met her first.
Meeting Tyler next...
The doctors finished up with me and sent me back to L&D to begin my recovery. Later that night, around midnight, I was wheeled down to the NICU (in my bed) to see my babies again before heading to my recovery room.
Seeing the babies again for the first time since birth.
I remember laying there literally almost all night, thinking about everything and soaking it all in. My mind would not stop racing so I couldn't sleep. I think I finally fell asleep around 6am. The next 4 or 5 days were spent recovering, building up a milk supply through the pump and visiting my babies in the NICU. The couple of months prior to their birth (in the hospital), their birth, my hospital departure after nine weeks (without my babies), my homecoming (Feb. 5th - almost a year ago to the day) and the first couple of months after they were brought home were SO incredibly difficult, but I would not change it for anything! I know it sounds so cliche' but I honestly couldn't imagine my life without them and I thank God for them.
Tyler Craig -
Then... Tyler was born weighing 4 pounds 6 ounces and was 18 inches long. He had always been my biggest baby in utero but because of his deteriorating placenta, he was born weighing less than his sisters. My little man was our lazy eater. He had what the NICU calls "wimpy white boy" syndrome. For some reason little white boys usually don't grasp the concepts they need to to come home as quickly as little girls. Mr. Tyler didn't want to eat from his bottle - he had a gavage (feeding tube) for that so he didn't see the need to try :) or maybe he just didn't have the strength. He also had a recessed chin which the doctors thought could pose a potential problem and may be part of the problem with his eating; today he has outgrown that and no longer has a recessed chin. Tyler was a sensitive boy and hated being messed with - temperature, diaper changes, clothing changes and he cried pretty easily. Tyler spent almost 4 weeks in the NICU coming home in late February (the 26th or 27th?).
Tyler in NICU
Tyler on the day we brought him home.
Now... My sweet BIG boy loves to eat! He is my best eater by far. He knows how to drink from a sippy cup and loves to eat more than drink. Tyler currently has 6 teeth. Tyler now weighs 22 pounds 5 ounces and is 29.5 inches long. Tyler loves to push his walker, dance to the music of his toys and is starting to attempt to climb.
Tyler is also obsessed with his tooth brush. Tyler is loving his new seating arrangement in the car - forward facing! Tyler got his first hair cut this month and looks so much more grown up now. He did pretty well in the beginning but after a while, he started getting fussy and cried until Al, Craig's barber gave Tyler a candy cane to suck on.
Tyler cruises around some on the furniture and is beginning to stand for a short time period without holding on to anything, which really surprises him that he can do it but makes him so proud of himself. However, his favorite mode of transportation is crawling because he is so good at it. He is also very very ticklish and will laugh and laugh until I am afraid he can't breathe. Tyler is all boy - he likes to hit or pat everything and even though he doesn't do it intentionally (yet) his hits/pats hurt. Tyler is our little explorer by far - he loves to get into everything imaginable. Today, Tyler is not so sensitive - he is a tough little boy and doesn't get so upset over things although he still is not a real big fan of diaper changes and clothing changes, but then again, what toddler is?
Not sure what was going on here - showing how BOY he is with the hat or trying to be an exhibitionist.
My little chunky boy!
Whitney Nicole -
Then... Whitney was born weighing the most of the three at 4 pounds 13 ounces and 17 1/2 inches long. Whitney was our most eager eater in NICU which ultimately is what brought her home first on February 15th after spending 2 weeks and 1 day in NICU. Whitney was labeled our "best" eater although the nurses didn't know how she was getting milk by the way she sucked the bottle. Whitney was always my little "problem child" in utero - giving the nurses a hard time when they tried to monitor her. She was a very active baby in utero. She was definitely our most feisty baby. Whitney was a very alert baby with very big, round eyes. She was taking it all in! Whitney loved to be next to her brother and sister in NICU and we even captured a series of pictures of her trying to hold their hands. It was so precious!
This is the picture of Whitney holding Tyler and Hannah's hands. Whitney is in the middle.
Whitney's homecoming!
Now... Whitney weighs 17 pounds 15 ounces and is 29.25 inches long. She likes her sippy cup and likes to eat real food and currently has 6 teeth. We are transitioning Whitney as well as the other two to whole milk and phasing out bottles - only taking 1 bottle before bed time.
Whitney crawls around every where but is usually not too far from my side - she is also my cuddler and loves to be held. She is my safe, cautious child which is why I believe she still doesn't like to pull up even though she can do it! She is very gentle and even pulls my hair gently. She likes to play and dance but usually likes to play alone probably to avoid the dreaded toy stealing of her siblings. Even still, her most favorite toys are socks, bibs, diapers or other small toys she can carry around easily.
She also likes to mimic everybody with noises and physical gestures. Whitney is by far my most sensitive child - a far cry from what she was at birth - and cries very easily. When her siblings steal a toy, she just cries and cries instead of stealing it back like the other two do. I rarely ever have to discipline Whitney because she doesn't usually get into anything she isn't supposed to.
Whitney was still not used to their cowboy/cowgirl hats I bought them for their birthday party - my sensitive girl. You may not be able to tell but she was crying here. :(
Whitney is still rear-facing because of her weight but is enjoying having Tyler facing her (since he is forward facing) so they can play and talk. Speaking of talking, Whitney as well as the other two are talking up a storm (baby language, that is) - it is never quiet in this house. No other words yet for any of them besides Mama and Dada oh and Nana for Tyler even though we don't call either grandmother Nana.
Hannah Michelle -
Then... Hannah was born weighing 4 pounds 9 ounces and was 17 1/2 inches long. Hannah was my most laid back baby in utero - cooperating with the nurses by letting them monitor her and being still. She was usually my most still baby in utero and proved to still be very laid back and easy going after she was born. Hannah quickly learned how to eat and surprised us all when she caught up to Whitney so fast and came home just one day after her on February 16th (two weeks and two days after birth). Hannah just went with the flow of most everything except reflux. She was also my best sleeper and was my biggest stretcher - I'll never forget how much she loved to stretch ALL the time.
Hannah in NICU starting up with her stretching obsession. This was just a mild stretch though. She was all swaddled up like a burrito and it was hard for her to get her arms out.
Hannah's homecoming!
Now... Hannah weighs 17 pounds 3 ounces and is 28.75 inches long. Hannah is still struggling with learning to drink from her sippy cup but we are working with her and she is improving. It took her a little while long to master eating finger foods, but now she has got it down and eats wonderfully and currently has 5 teeth.
Like Tyler, Hannah likes to try to stand holding onto nothing. She doesn't have quite the balance as Tyler, but she does stand for about half a second. She likes to chew on everything - furniture, toys, her bed, her siblings...everything. She plays a lot with Tyler and continues to be my prime toy stealer.
Much to my surprise, Hannah is my bully of the group - she is also going to be my biter. She will bite playfully sometimes and other times, I know she is biting maliciously. Hannah is quite the adventurer like Tyler but doesn't seem to get into quite as much mischief as he does. Hannah likes to push her walker and LOVES elmo! She is also really getting into patty cake.
Hannah is still a laid back baby but is definitely beginning to voice her likes and dislikes. She cries a lot when told "no" and isn't quite ready to mind when being disciplined. She loves to steal everybody's toothbrushes which seems to turn into a fit-throwing scene on a nightly basis. She is very ticklish and seems to loves to be tickled. She is a very happy baby most of the time.
I'll be doing a separate post soon on their birthday party and events so check back soon!

Bloody lip 364 days later!
Tyler also had his first hair cut last weekend and I will try to do a post on that. If I don't get around to doing a separate post, I will put it on their one year post.
Until then...

2 down, 1 to go...
Oh and before you ask or say anything... he is not sucking his thumb or fingers either! Hannah did give up paci's a long time ago and only wants her 2 middle fingers on her left hand. However, she only sucks them during her sleep or if she is really tired/upset. Whitney is the only one left who is very much attached to her paci and this is during sleep only.

26 hours and counting...
The girls slept in fleece sleep sacks last night - cute huh? I think it slowed them down some in their cribs and made it more difficult for them to get up on hands and knees and sit up in bed.
Tyler pulls down on the bumper and looks out if I am in the room while he is awake in his crib. He wanted me to let him out of jail.

Tyler's army crawl & eating fruit through mesh/net
Tyler is starting to crawl - army crawl that is. He is definitely mobile! If he sees something he wants, there is no stopping him. Its funny because Tyler started getting up on his hands and knees much after Hannah but lately, he has taken off very quickly. Hannah is still up on hands and knees and rocks back and forth constantly. My guess is she will not army crawl. Whitney can also pull up on her hands and knees (as of today or yesterday) but has not started rocking or anything. She can drag herself/army crawl a little but nothing like Tyler can.
I got the babies some of those mesh/net things to eat fruit through. Tyler and Whitney enjoyed it once they learned what they were supposed to be doing. At first they sucked on the handle rather than the mesh part. Hannah didn't like it at all. I tried a second fruit in there after she refused it with the first fruit and she still didn't like it.

Tyler at 8 months
Tyler is a good independent sitter but he doesn't stay in the position long because he always wants to get on his tummy so he spin around and get into things.
